In January I noticed that the Ikea play kitchen (here and here) was reduced in their sale. Thinking ahead Greig and I decided to buy it for Grier's birthday. We are not the type of people who generally buy birthday presents 8 months in advance so we were pretty smug about the savings we thought we had made. Only it turns out it has been permanently reduced, so well played Ikea. Not so smug now are we?
My friend has the kitchen for her little girls and I know they've got a lot of play out of it so I was confident Grier would like it. I kept an eye on Zulily leading up to her birthday and picked up Melissa and Doug wooden pans and fruits and veggies to stock the little cupboards.
Browsing Pinterest one day I came across some Duktig kitchens that had been fancied up and I thought - self, I must fancy up the kitchen. It is a bit plain after all, just begging for a little something, something.
And subsequently I made absolutely no plans to do so and left the kitchen unbuilt and unfancied in the garage for 7 months. Then one day while browsing a home bargain store - you know the ones - I came across a roll of sticky vinyl in a leaf print design, not unlike the distinctive Orla Kiely stem print if you squint a bit (well spotted Mrs Mac Hall!).
It was remarkably easy to apply this stuff to the kitchen. I cut bits off as needed peeled a bit of the backing paper off, stuck it down and then peeled the rest of the backing paper off as I smoothed it down. It hasn't moved or peeled yet - to be fair only two weeks in - but I think it will be fairly hardwearing. I thought I'd cover our older Ikea children's table as well but it turned out to be much harder. There was much swearing and sticking vinyl to oneself involved.
It makes me very happy to see the kitchen in my kitchen. I love the pattern - and Grier is having lots of fun cooking and surprisingly loves to clean up given a cloth. Brodie has also been getting his cook on regularly.
I'm thinking Santa might bring some more accessories and an apron perhaps? Get busy Santa, you know how you like to procrastinate on these things.....
